Three Countries, One Winter Adventure: Claudia Traveling Prague, Vienna & Budapest with OWR

by | Dec 30, 2025

Claudia didn’t expect to fall in love with a winter trip through Central Europe, especially as a Floridian who avoids the cold.

But traveling through Prague, Vienna, and Budapest with OWR quickly proved that the right group (and the right itinerary) can change everything.

If you had told me a few years ago that I would be happily strolling through Central Europe in late November, voluntarily, I probably would have laughed. I’m a Floridian. Cold weather and I are not best friends. And yet, here I was, bundled up and exploring Prague, Vienna, and Budapest on my third trip with OWR Travel…and absolutely loving it.

This trip wasn’t originally even on my radar. Czech Republic, Austria, and Hungary were not destinations I would been actively planning to visit. But once I read the itinerary and saw what was included, something clicked. I realized this was the kind of trip that would be perfect to do as part of a group, especially during winter. I knew I would experience things I probably wouldn’t push myself to do solo… like, you know, traveling in the cold on purpose.

And honestly? I’m so glad I did.

“THIS BEING MY THIRD OWR TRIP, I ALREADY TRUSTED THE QUALITY, THE PLANNING, AND THE OVERALL EXPERIENCE”

One of the reasons I love traveling with OWR is that it introduces me to places I might not have chosen on my own, but end up falling in love with. This being my third OWR trip, I already trusted the quality, the planning, and the overall experience. So when I saw Prague, Vienna, and Budapest grouped together, I thought, Okay, this could be really good. I also knew that if I were going to do a winter trip anywhere, it would have to be with a group.

Left to my own devices, I would have skipped winter travel entirely and missed out on the Christmas markets, the cozy atmosphere, and the whole festive vibe that Central Europe does so well. Being with a group meant I would be more motivated to get out, explore, and fully experience the destination, even when it was cold.

So while I was technically traveling solo, I never really felt alone. It was the best of both worlds. As the trip approached, I’ll be honest, I was a bit nervous. Not because of the destination, but because of the government shutdown happening in the U.S. at the time. There was a moment when I genuinely wondered if the trip would even happen or if travel delays and cancellations were going to throw everything off.

“ONE OF THE THINGS OWR CONSISTENTLY DOES WELL IS BRINGING TOGETHER PEOPLE WHO GENUINELY LOVE TO TRAVEL, AND THIS GROUP WAS NO EXCEPTION”

Thankfully, everything worked out smoothly. No delays. No cancellations. No travel chaos. Once that stress lifted, excitement took over, and I was officially ready to go. By the time I arrived, I was exhausted, and yes, it was cold. Very cold. But as soon as I got into the car headed toward the hotel in Prague, I started noticing the differences right away. The architecture. The older buildings. The overall vibe. It felt completely different from the U.S. in the best way. Even through jet lag and layers of winter clothing, I could already tell this trip was going to be something special.

One of the things OWR consistently does well is bringing together people who genuinely love to travel, and this group was no exception. Everyone got along really well, and we quickly fell into a rhythm of doing activities together, sharing meals, and exploring the cities.

Of course, during free time, little groups naturally formed depending on interests, but overall the dynamic was smooth, respectful, and easygoing. Everyone was patient, open-minded, and there to enjoy the experience. No drama, no issues, just good vibes.

“AND THEN THERE WAS OUR TOUR LEADER, MARKETA, WHO WAS ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC”

And then there was our tour leader, Marketa, who was absolutely fantastic. She was informative, organized, patient (very patient), and kept everything running on time. Navigating public transportation with a group is no small task, yet she handled it seamlessly.

There was also one ongoing group joke: asking—repeatedly—whether we needed to validate our train tickets. No matter how many times it was explained, someone would ask again… and it somehow never stopped being funny.

All three hotels were great, and I had zero complaints. What stood out most to me was the location. Each hotel made it easy to walk or use public transportation, which is exactly what you want when exploring major cities. Being able to step outside and immediately feel connected to the city made a huge difference. Plus, it gave us more opportunities to explore the surrounding neighborhoods without feeling rushed or restricted.

“IF I HAD TO CHOOSE ONE STANDOUT THEME OF THIS TRIP, IT WOULD BE THE FOOD”

Let’s talk about the food (because… wow) If I had to choose one standout theme of this trip, it would be the food. Every country delivered. From food tours to local specialties, everything we tried felt authentic and thoughtfully chosen. One of my favorite experiences was the food tour, where we walked, ate, walked some more, and ate again. At first, I thought I would be completely full after the first stop, but the pacing was perfect.

Sausages, schnitzels, goulash, lángos, everything was delicious. Each destination brought its own flavors and traditions, and I loved being able to experience that through food. It wasn’t just about eating; it was about understanding the culture in the best way possible.

The itinerary struck a nice balance between structured activities and free time. Prague and Budapest, in particular, gave us more opportunities to explore on our own, which I really appreciated.

Vienna, while absolutely beautiful and full of history, felt a bit more structured with less free time, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. There was still so much to see, and the experiences we did have were incredible, including attending a live classical concert, which felt incredibly fitting for the city.

From strolling through Prague’s fairytale-like Old Town to soaking in Budapest’s famous thermal baths, every activity added something unique to the experience.

While every destination had something special, Budapest completely stole my heart. Seeing the reflections of the castles and city lights on the river during the evening cruise was breathtaking. That moment alone made me fall in love with the city.

Prague was amazing as well. Its gothic architecture, historic streets, and overall atmosphere felt straight out of a storybook. I loved how dramatic and different it felt compared to anywhere else I have been.

Vienna was elegant, historic, and beautiful, but I think having less free time made it harder to fully connect with it the way I did with Prague and Budapest. Still, the history and culture were undeniable.

Sometimes it’s the small things that make a trip memorable. Like repeatedly asking if we needed to validate train tickets. Or navigating public transportation together. Or warming up after a cold day with good food and laughter.

Those moments, the unplanned ones, are often what I remember most.

“YOU MIGHT HAVE TRAVELED WITH OTHER COMPANIES BEFORE, BUT OWR CONSISTENTLY DELIVERS THOUGHTFUL ITINERARIES, GREAT GROUP DYNAMICS, AND EXPERIENCES THAT FEEL WELL-CURATED RATHER THAN RUSHED”

If you have already traveled with OWR, then you know the quality of their trips. And if you haven’t yet, I would say give them a chance. You might have traveled with other companies before, but OWR consistently delivers thoughtful itineraries, great group dynamics, and experiences that feel well-curated rather than rushed.

This trip, in particular, showed me that destinations I never considered, and seasons I usually avoid, can end up being some of the most rewarding travel experiences of all.

Even for a Floridian who doesn’t love the cold.
