Our Route Through Kenya & Tanzania
Itinerary
Day 1
JAMBO KENYA!
Touchdown in Nairobi! You’ll be met at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and whisked through the traffic to our hotel—your comfy base for the next two nights. After checking in and freshening up, we head for a relaxed welcome dinner. Think: grilled tilapia, chapati, and maybe a cold Tusker beer. You’ve officially landed in East Africa. Nairobi is a city of contrasts—modern skyscrapers sit alongside bustling markets and colonial-era buildings. Kenya is known for its incredible wildlife, warm hospitality, and rich cultural heritage – it all starts here.
Day 2
HANGING OUT WITH GIRAFFES + EXPLORING NAIROBI
Today it’s off to the Giraffe Centre in Lang’ata, where you’ll get up close with Rothschild giraffes, feed them by hand, and possibly get a surprise “giraffe kiss” if you’re brave enough. After lunch (try a nyama choma spot nearby), we dive into a local storytelling experience with the guys from Nai Nami—a group of ex-street kids turned guides who’ll show you Nairobi’s raw and real side through their eyes. Expect music, personal stories, and alleyways you wouldn’t find on Google Maps. Then, we’re back to the hotel in the evening to chill.
Day 3
AMBOSELI NATIONAL PARK
We start our safari adventure. After breakfast, we hit the road south toward Amboseli National Park—a drive of about 4 hours with scenic countryside views. We check into Kibo Safari Camp, where our tents have a solid bed and if you’re lucky enough you may catch your first glimpse of Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance. In the afternoon, we head out on a game drive across the park’s dusty plains. Amboseli is elephant territory—you’ll likely see big tuskers trudging along marshy grasslands, plus zebras, cheetahs, and hippos doing their thing. Dinner back at camp is hearty and well-earned.
Day 4
MEET THE MAASAI
After breakfast, we pack up and drive to the Namanga border post. Our destination is Africa Amini Life Maasai Lodge, tucked away in the hills near Mount Meru. The place is peaceful and designed in traditional Maasai style—think thatched roofs, warm hospitality, and cows roaming freely nearby. In the afternoon, join your hosts to learn about Maasai culture: go on a bushwalk, try throwing a spear, learn a bit of Maa language, or dance around a fire at sunset. You’ll fall asleep to the sound of crickets and distant cowbells.
Day 5
SHIRA PLATEAU HIKE
Lace up your hiking shoes—we’re heading up the Shira Plateau today, part of Mount Kilimanjaro’s western flank. The drive to the trailhead takes a bit, but the views are worth it. The hike isn’t crazy difficult (8km in distance), but you’ll feel the altitude (3800m), and the landscapes change fast—open moorland, volcanic rock, and hardy plants like giant lobelias. Keep your eyes peeled for colobus monkeys and sunbirds. At the top, you’ll get sweeping views all the way to the Amboseli plains where you were just days ago. Back at the lodge, enjoy a hot shower and a slow dinner under the stars.
Day 6
KARATU & MTO WA MBU VILLAGE
We say goodbye to the mountains and drive toward Karatu, a lush highland town surrounded by farms and rolling hills. After checking into our lodge, we hop into a bajaji—East Africa’s version of a tuk-tuk—and go explore Mto Wa Mbu village. Visit the local produce market, pop into a roadside banana beer spot if you’re curious, and chat with tailors, potters, or teachers as you wind through the neighborhoods. It’s low-key, local, and a great way to get a sense of daily life here. Dinner is back at the lodge, where they serve tasty home-cooked fare—maybe ugali with beef stew or coconut veggies.
Day 7
NGORONGORO CRATER + SERENGETI
Today we make our way into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The real highlight? Descending into the Ngorongoro Crater, a massive volcanic caldera teeming with wildlife. It’s a weird and wonderful place: rhinos grazing next to warthogs, flamingos wading in Lake Magadi, and hyenas yipping at everything. After a picnic lunch down on the crater floor (watch out for sneaky vervet monkeys), we continue toward Serengeti for a game drive in the afternoon, with wildebeest and zebra herds stretching for miles. Afterwards, we go to our tented camp, where you hear lions calling in the distance as you drift off to sleep.
Day 8
FULL DAY GAME DRIVE
We set out early—sunrise over the Serengeti is something else. We get to spend the full day out in the wild plains, where our guide will track the migrating herds. You could see a wildebeest calf being born (they drop by the thousands in Feb), a pride of lions stalking a zebra, or a leopard lounging in an acacia tree like it owns the world. We stop for lunch in the bush and then continue exploring until sunset. Back at camp, trade sightings with your group over dinner and maybe a drink by the fire.
(Note – there is also an optional extra to do a sunrise Hot Air Balloon ride over the Serengeti on this day. See ‘special notes’ below).
Day 9
FLYING TO ARUSHA
After one last slow morning in the Serengeti just soaking it all in, we head to the airstrip for a short scenic flight back to Arusha. From above, the vast plains, scattered acacia trees, and winding rivers give you a whole new perspective on everything you’ve just experienced (one final reminder of just how massive and wild this part of the world really is!). Upon landing, we transfer to our lodge for our final night. It’s the perfect place to unwind, grab a drink, chill by the hotel pool, and relive the best moments from the past days with the group.
Day 10
UNTIL NEXT TIME, AFRICA!
Your East African adventure wraps up today. Over the past eleven days, you’ve explored the busy streets of Nairobi, crossed the border into Tanzania, hung out with the Maasai, hiked the foot of Kilimanjaro, and explored everything from busy towns to quiet plains full of wildlife. You’ve spotted elephants, lions, and maybe even a rhino or two, and shared stories with local communities along the way. After breakfast, enjoy a slow morning—maybe a walk around the gardens or one last coffee with a view—before your transfer to the airport. Bags are a little heavier, heart a lot fuller. Time to head home.

FAQs & Important Notes
Below are some of the common questions we tend to get asked – we’ve answered both in video format (general across all OWR trips) and written format (specific to this particular trip).
SPECIAL NOTES ABOUT THIS TRIP!
1. Long Driving Distances (on bumpy roads)!
This trip is designed as an East African road trip—because we believe it’s the best way to truly experience this part of the world.
That does mean covering significant distances. Over the 10 days, we travel approximately 770 miles / 1,250 km between locations, with additional driving during activities such as game drives and city tours.
You’ll spend much of the trip in comfortable 4×4 vehicles, but many roads are unpaved, rocky, and bumpy—especially as we venture into more remote areas.
The upside? These journeys are all part of the experience. Many drives pass through national parks and incredible landscapes, often doubling as game-viewing opportunities, and this is something our past travellers have loved.
That said, it’s important you are comfortable with a trip that involves a fair amount of time on the road.
2. Serengeti
On Days 7 and 8, we explore the Serengeti Ecosystem, positioning ourselves in the best possible locations to witness the Great Wildebeest Migration.
Because the migration moves throughout the year, we don’t stay in just one fixed location. Instead, we adapt our route and accommodation depending on when you travel—ensuring you’re in the right place at the right time for the best wildlife viewing.
For trips running from January to March, we stay in the Ndutu region in the southern Serengeti Ecosystem, where the migration gathers during calving season. At other times of year, we base ourselves in the Central Serengeti, which offers excellent year-round game viewing.
Ndutu itself sits within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, just outside Serengeti National Park—but during this period, it’s widely considered one of the best locations in all of East Africa for wildlife sightings.
3. Hot Air Balloon Ride
On Day 8, there is the option to take a hot air balloon safari over the Serengeti – an unforgettable way to experience the landscape from above at sunrise.
This is an optional activity and not included in the standard itinerary, but we’re happy to arrange it for you with our trusted local partners.
The experience typically costs between $550–$600 USD per person. If you’re interested, simply let your Tour Leader know at the start of the trip and we’ll take care of the rest.
4. Flight from Serengeti to Arusha
On Day 9, instead of driving back, we take a short internal flight from the Serengeti to Arusha in a small aircraft.
Driving this route would take several hours on long, bumpy roads, so flying is a much more efficient and comfortable option. The flight significantly reduces travel time and allows you to avoid a full day in the vehicle.
Flights are typically operated on light aircraft. While they’re simple and more compact than commercial planes, they are a safe and common way to travel between safari destinations in East Africa.
This also means you’ll get a unique aerial view of the landscapes you’ve just explored, from the vast Serengeti plains to scattered acacia trees, offering a different perspective before arriving back in Arusha.
