Anneka’s Journey through India: From the Chaos of Delhi to the Shores of Goa

When Anneka finally got the chance to visit the country that had captivated her since childhood, she jumped at it—solo, and with a group of strangers she’d never met.
Two weeks later, those strangers had become friends, the chaos of India felt like home, and her bucket list was not only ticked, but completely blown away. This is her colourful, heartfelt, and occasionally chaotic journey with OWR India.
When I was 10 years old, we did a project in Primary School on the Taj Mahal, and I was instantly captivated. To visit such a place of wonder seemed impossible, but from that moment on, it was firmly planted at the top of my bucket list.
Fast forward 20+ years, and suddenly the opportunity arose: the possibility to visit India with Other Way Round Travel. I knew India did not appeal to any of my friends, so I had a decision to make, do I join a group of like-minded solo travellers, and explore a land I’ve always dreamed of seeing, or stay at home in my comfort zone and miss out. It took all of two seconds to decide. I jumped at the chance, and it was the best decision I ever made.
I flew from Dublin to Dubai, then from Dubai to Delhi, buzzing with excitement. When I finally arrived at the hotel, I opened the door to meet my roommate for the next two weeks and announced, “I’m hooooome!”— a perfect icebreaker that set the tone for an unforgettable trip.
After a quick bag drop and freshen-up, it was time to dive straight into the adventure – I had signed up for the optional excursion on day one. We explored some local sights and sat down for lunch, where I had the most unforgettable butter chicken. I still dream about it to this day!
“BY THE END OF THE TRIP, WE FELT LIKE SEASONED VETERANS OF INDIAN ROADS”
On the road back to our beautiful hotel, we spotted a man on a moped with a 46-inch television strapped to his back with string—and I thought, this is the kind of chaos I was expecting. And I absolutely loved it. Those first few bus rides were definitely nerve-wracking. Traffic lanes? Non-existent. Road rules? Optional. Car horns? Constant. But somehow, it all just works. We quickly adapted, and by the end of the trip, we felt like seasoned veterans of Indian roads—dodging rickshaws, weaving through traffic, and honking like pros.
Later that evening, we had our welcome meeting with our incredible tour guide, Ankita, met the rest of our group, and headed out for dinner. It’s amazing how quickly a table of strangers can become a table of new travel buddies. Everyone was connected by a shared curiosity—to explore a new land—and beneath the excitement, we all carried a hint of nervousness. That quiet vulnerability is a surprisingly powerful bond. What unfolded over the next 14 days was a deeply immersive, colourful journey through bustling cities, peaceful countryside, and sacred landmarks—all while connecting with fellow travellers from around the world.
“WE DINED AT ONE OF DELHI’S OLDEST RESTAURANTS, SAVOURING A MULTI-COURSE MEAL THAT WAS NOTHING SHORT OF INCREDIBLE”
Day 1–2: Delhi – Chaos, Colour, and Culture Shock
The journey began in Delhi, India’s capital and a perfect introduction to the country’s contrasts. The streets were a sensory overload — honking traffic, rickshaws, fragrant street food, historic Mughal architecture, and lively markets. We visited Jama Masjid, the oldest mosque in the city, we were immersed in centuries of history, awe-struck by its grand architecture and the serene atmosphere that surrounded us, despite the chaos outside.
That evening, we dined at one of Delhi’s oldest restaurants, savouring a multi-course meal that was nothing short of incredible. After our meal, local dancers performed a vibrant show, making the night truly unforgettable.
Delhi Highlight: Sheeshganj Gurudwara, a Sikh temple where you’re welcomed with open arms. We sat in the main prayer hall with worshippers, helped make chapatis alongside local volunteers, and visited the dining area where hundreds of people are fed daily.
Day 3–4: Agra – The Icon of Love
Day 3 and the excitement was bubbling over as we headed to Agra, home of the iconic Taj Mahal. After a 4-hour bus journey we checked in at the beautiful Grand Imperial Hotel and got ready to finally head to the Taj Mahal! We had a local tour guide meet us there, who explained the history of this World Wonder. We then had time to explore, as the sun began to set it was one of the most surreal moments of the trip. The golden hour certainly brought the building to life. The scale, the symmetry, the story behind it, was so deeply moving for me, especially after waiting all these years to see it for myself.
Also visited: Agra Fort and Mehtab Bagh for a stunning Taj view from afar.
“WE STAYED IN THE CHARMING RANTHAMBORE HERITAGE HAVELI HOTEL, WHERE WE WERE GREETED WITH A WARM AND INVITING WELCOME FROM THE STAFF”
Day 4-5: Ranthambore National Park – Tiger Safari
We stayed in the charming Ranthambore Heritage Haveli hotel, where we were greeted with a warm and inviting welcome from the staff. Once settled in we had some time to unwind and relax before dinner, and an evening of cultural entertainment in the garden. An incredible way to immerse ourselves in local traditions.
We were up bright and early the following morning to hit the road in our Safari Jeeps as we headed through the gates of the Ranthambore National Park, at sunrise, in search of the elusive Tigers. The exhilaration as we sped around dust tracks was incredible.
We returned to the hotel to enjoy the facilities and relaxed before heading out again at dusk. Unfortunately, we did not get to see the beautiful tigers, but we did see a crocodile basking in the marsh and many graceful deer roaming the landscape. A very memorable day out.
“RAJASTHAN’S CAPITAL WAS LIKE A LIVING PAINTING”
Day 6–7: Jaipur – The Pink City
Rajasthan’s capital was like a living painting. From the colourful walls of the Amber Fort to the pink façades of Hawa Mahal, Jaipur blended royal elegance with local hustle. The roads were so busy with families heading home for their Diwali celebrations. It really added to the sense of excitement but also honour to be included.
We checked in at our hotel and it was time to don our sarees before joining a local family for a Diwali celebration to remember. From home cooked food to incredible fireworks overlooking the city, it certainly was a night to remember. The following day we set off on the Pink Ladies’ Rickshaw food tour. An absolute delight for the senses!! The sights and flavours are truly not to be missed.
Afterwards, a few of us ventured out for some bargaining for clothes and souvenirs.
While out and about we were lucky enough to spot a beautiful elephant being ridden down the street, certainly not something you would see at home! That evening, I signed up for the Bollywood Dance class at the hotel, before heading for a rooftop dinner, overlooking the streets below, lit up with Diwali fireworks. As usual the food was delicious, and the venue was top tier.
Fun memory: A spontaneous group henna session and wearing a saree like the locals.
Tip: immerse yourself in everything!
“FOR ME THE TAJ MAHAL WAS TO BE THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE TRIP, BUT STILL TO THIS DAY I CANNOT TALK ABOUT THE GANGES WITHOUT FEELING EMOTIONAL”
Day 8–9: Varanasi and the Ganges – Life, Death, and Everything In Between
Next, we flew to Varanasi, where spirituality takes center stage. We had our first experience and enchantment of the Ganges on our sunset boat tour. From the water you get a true sense of the importance of the Ganges for the Pilgrims. The waterbody is a living breathing entity, the beating heart of the community around which everything revolves. I was captivated by the witnessing the Ganga Aarti from the shoreline and privileged to float candles carrying wishes, and memories of loved ones no longer with us down the river. To being moved by witnessing the reality of life and death, as people immersed themselves in the Ganga to purify their souls, while others were cremated further downstream.
For me the Taj Mahal was to be the highlight of the trip, but still to this day I cannot talk about the Ganges without feeling emotional! The evening boat tour was so spiritual regardless of what you do or don’t believe in, everyone on the boat took something from that night! The sunrise trip the following morning showed the full scale of the Ganges and it was incredible. Later that day we visited the Sarnath, where Buddhism came to existence, another unbelievable experience.
Day 10–11: Mumbai – sights and delights
After a short flight, we arrived in the bustling city of Mumbai, we made it just in time to attend High Tea at the exquisite 5-star Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, an experience not to be missed. A blend of English and Indian culinary delights in the Sea Lounge overlooking the Arabian Sea. I recommend to splash out and add the Moet Champagne! Highlights in Mumbai included traveling by train, visiting the Dabbawala and having a Persian lunch.
Day 12-14: Goa – relax and recharge
The final destination on our packed itinerary was Goa, the hotel was gorgeous and a complete contrast to the rest of the holiday, you feel like you’re staying in a tropical resort. Enjoy lunch looking over the paddy fields where water buffalo roam freely.
Take a dip in the refreshing pool or treat yourself and visit the on-site spa. I highly recommend full body massage! We began the next day with an energising sunrise yoga session on the beach, led by our tour guide Ankita. We enjoyed cocktails by the pool and dined in the hotel restaurant for our farewell dinner, where we reminisced about the wonderful two weeks we had experienced together. Tears were shed, which was testament to the incredible rollercoaster trip we all experienced together as friends. Unfortunately, the next day it was time to say goodbye.
“OUR GUIDE ANKITA WENT ABOVE AND BEYOND AND TRULY UNDERSTOOD EVERYONE’S NEEDS”
I cannot recommend the trip enough! It was unbelievable from start to finish. Our guide Ankita went above and beyond and truly understood everyone’s needs. The pride she has in her country is so evident, and she was an amazing guide. If you are considering this trip – just go for it!!!
If you’re curious about India, and enjoyed Anneka’s story, our tour is a pretty great way to experience it.
